35th Anniversary Cookbook
Plans are underway for a cookbook of the wonderful recipes from our members and friends. Beginning in April we will start collecting recipes by category. For example…April will be Appetizer Month so email or bring into the office your favorite appetizer recipes. Each month we will ask for recipes in a specific category. We also plan to include stories of Mountain View’s history. This will be a fund raiser for Café Soul and Outreach Ministries. If you are interested in helping with this project, contact Gail Golden at gailgolden@yahoo.com.

DASH to Health Tidbits
By Deborah A. Richardson, MA, RD
Cutting Back on Added Sugars
As if we needed more evidence to tell us added sugars, including sugar-sweetened beverages, in our diets may raise the risk of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. The typical American consumes about 400 calories’ worth of added sugars or sugars not found naturally in the food or beverage. Here are some reasons to decrease the amount of added sugar we consume:
1. We can’t afford the empty calories. There is no nutritional benefit whatsoever. Added sugars tend to crowd out foods that we need to stay healthy, or they increase our weight if we eat them in addition to foods we need for our health.
2. Sugar-sweetened beverages promote obesity. We eat about 20% more added sugars now than we did in 1970 due to the high consumption of soft drinks. Any sugary liquids help make us fatter because they don’t curb our appetite for more food. This includes sports drinks, energy drinks, sweetened teas and juice drinks.
3. Sugar-sweetened drinks may raise the risk of heart disease. Excess weight isn’t good for our heart. Our big bellies raise the risk of diabetes as well. Research shows that people who drink at least 2 sugar-sweetened beverages per day have a 20% higher risk of heart disease than those who drank one or less.
4. Added sugars increase our triglyceride levels which raises our risk of heart disease and becoming insulin resistant. Researchers tracked 91,000 women for 8 years and found that those who drank at least one sugar-sweetened beverage per day had an 83% higher risk of type 2 diabetes than those who drank less than one per month. There is also evidence that added sugars contribute to high blood pressure.
5. Added sugars may promote overeating by suppressing the hormone leptin that helps curb our appetites. If we get our carbs from whole grains, vegetables, fruits and beans, we wouldn’t overeat. We need to eat foods that are packaged naturally with their own fiber and natural sugars. Added sugars tend to make us want more and more and more.
6. Shoot for 100 calories or 6 teaspoons of added sugars per day if you are a woman. A man should aim for no more than 150 calories or 9 teaspoons per day.
7. Limit fruit juices to no more than 1 cup per day.
8. Limit all sugars including high-fructose corn syrup, cane or beet sugar, evaporated cane juice, brown rice syrup, agave syrup and honey.
9. If a food contains little fruit or milk (which contain natural sugars) the “sugar” number on the nutrition label will tell you how much added sugars are in each serving.
10. To estimate your calorie need and added-sugars limit, check out MyPyramid.gov and click on “Get a personalized Plan” in the “I Want To…” box.

From the Pastor’s Desk
By Pastor Zorb
Some people were stunned in a recent sermon when I explained that if our members tithed (gave 1/10 of their income) to Mountain View for just the next 12 months we would be able to:
1. Pay off our entire mortgage ($2.5 million)
2. Double our benevolence giving to ministries beyond our doors
3. Double our program budget for the programs we do on campus
4. Give the entire staff a 10% raise
5. And still have money left over to save for a rainy day!
What I didn’t spell out was just how much we would have left to save for a rainy day so let me tell you here: we would have approximately $1,360,000 left over. I know these are tough economic times for many people and some of our members cannot afford to give 10% back to God with all the other obligations they have taken on. My point is that we can do far more, however, than we give ourselves credit for being able to do. Remember the story of the little engine that could? The engine kept saying to himself: “I think I can, I think I can!” And lo and behold he could! I want to challenge each of us to do what we can and quit telling ourselves we can’t accomplish much in these times. Jesus put it this way: “…with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26 RSV)
“Mission Impossible” was an exciting television series many of us grew up with but in the Kingdom of God there is no such thing as an impossible mission! Come join the reality show of life in the Kingdom of God, it is much more exciting than watching a television show!

God’s Global Barnyard
Sunday school is participating in God’s Global Barnyard as part of their Lenten discipline. The Bible gives clear direction that we should help the needy. As we journey through the season of Lent, we’d like to ask for your help in teaching our children this concept.
God’s Global Barnyard runs through March 28. The children will receive banks which they can fill with their money. The donations received help support the ELCA’s efforts to reduce World Hunger. The money raised doesn’t just provide a little food to help these needy families, but buys for them animals that provide a source of income for these families thus, helping end the cycle of poverty. Encourage your children to donate money from allowances, birthday or Christmas money, or by doing extra chores around the house.
Children are asked to write their names and phone numbers on their banks when they turn them in. All banks will be entered to win one of three Webkins toys. Banks should be returned on Palm Sunday (March 27 & 28) during the Palm procession. If you have any questions, please contact Robin Moe at rmoe@mvlutheran.org or 480-893-2579.

Hannah Circle
Hannah Circle will meet on Tuesdays, March 2 & 16, to continue our study of the book of James. On March 2, our study is "True Wisdom" from James 3: 13-18, where James offers wisdom as another true test of living faith. Those who possess genuine saving faith will manifest the wisdom of God. On March 16, our study is "Friendship with the World" based on James 4: 1-12. Here James argues that genuine spiritual life and faithful Christian living involve separation from the world and all its countless contaminations. We have had some very lively discussions about faith and Christian living thus far and have been challenged to deeply examine our own faith! We would love to have you join us at the home of Inge Mack beginning at 9:15am with coffee, snacks and fellowship. Phone Inge at 480-961-4649 or Pam at 480-759-1897 for more information.

Mission Mexico 2010: May 30 – June 4
Sweat. Joy. Mexican Community. Family. Team building. Mud. Deepening faith. Sore muscles. New friends. Bucket showers. Accomplishment.
If this sounds like the kind of trip that will change your life you are correct. For the last 17 years, Mountain View has been providing an opportunity for people to step out in faith, to build hope in communities other than our own one house at a time. Working with Amor Ministries for sixteen years, we have built simple 11’x22’, two-room homes with a concrete floor, stucco-finished exterior, weather sealed roof, two windows, and a door. An Amor house is a simple design, built according to the standards of the local community so that a group without skilled labor or power tools can still complete the project.
Amor doesn't allow the use of power tools or generators on the worksite. We want everyone to be involved in the house building process and power tools do not foster that environment. We realize there are other methods of completing the building project more quickly, but we want everyone to experience the culture, get to know the family we are building for, and allow for a positive cultural experience.
If you would like to join us May 30 to June 4, please register by March 7. Total trip cost is $315 per person. For more information, or a registration packet, check out our webpage at http://www.mvlutheran.org/mexico/mexico.asp, or contact Pastor Leland at 480-893-2579 or larmbright@mvlutheran.org.

Prayer Ministry
“Prayer IS the work!”
The title is a quote from Victor Jakpor. You may know Victor; you know his heart for his hometown, Sapele*, Nigeria. What you may not be aware of, however, is that Victor is not the beginning of the story for Mission Africa. In a recent conversation with him, he shared the amazing story of a woman in Sapele who began praying years before our church arrived on the scene. Her prayer was simple and focused, “Bring back the children of Sapele who have gone out in the world. Bring them back to impact this land!”
Prayer is the work at Mountain View, too. Share your specific prayers for your service or ministry with those of us who pray for you. It all begins with prayer, so share prayers with your team members in all the activities you are involved with here. Email your prayers to the prayer chain at Prayers@mvlutheran.org. Most importantly, support one another and our church in prayer!
Upcoming Prayer Opportunities
March 13 – Prayer on Campus
This will follow the 5:30pm worship on the evening before our guests from Africa arrive. Join us in a Prayer Walk to prepare for the African Children’s Choir Event.
Good Friday, April 2 from 5:30am – 5:30pm – Prayer Vigil
Our sanctuary will be open to you for reflection and prayer on this eventful day. Spend a few minutes or an hour. Jesus the Lamb of God will be the focus, using the 23rd Psalm.
Thursday Prayer
All are welcome to prayer groups that meet on campus Thursday mornings and Thursday evenings. Contact Prayerteam@mvluthern.org or the church office for details.
* Sapele (səpā'lē), the city is one of Nigeria's major ports. Its industries include the processing of timber, rubber, and palm oil, as well as furniture and footwear manufacturing. As of 2005/2006, the population of this advancing city is 142,652.

Join us for Meals on a Mission! Blessings from God just splash all over us as we live, work, and share together in the mission God has for us in Sun Lakes/South Chandler!
As we approach Lent, God has new blessings waiting for us just over the horizon. The possible worship time change to Sunday morning, and a growing awareness of the needs of the community, God is showing us our mission to the long-lived who have been blessed by God and are in need of spending their last days in the company of a community of faith who cares about them and are willing to put their lives behind that care.
Each Wednesday, from February 24 through Wednesday, April 7 at 5:00pm, Melissa and David Harr are going to be offering Meals and a Mission. Come for a meal and a time to be together as the community of faith to learn more about each other, our community, and about the love of God that has blessed us through the years to care for and love those God puts before us, those who come into our community of faith, and those we will “walk across the room” with an invitation and a willingness to back up our love with action.

Trendsetters Club
M.A.G.I.C.* at Kyrene las Lomas Elementary School
It was a memorable day late in January for the Kyrene de las Lomas Trendsetters when Dr. Howard Conley celebrated his 80th birthday at their school. Conley, former MVLC Council President and a leader of the Imagine Campaign shared with the young students how to be a successful student and leader. He spoke of his personal story of how education gave him the ticket to a successful life and took him to be Superintendent of Chandler Schools. The students were spell-bound.
Also on this day, the newly appointed student officers were installed. Mountain View Lutheran Church has facilitated the Trendsetter through Education Program for four years at Las Lomas Elementary School.
