Contributions Made Easy
Option One:
New Online Giving Program
Mountain View Lutheran Church is embracing a giving option that may be more convenient for many of our parishioners called “Online Giving.” This new giving option will work in the same manner as mortgages, loan payments or insurance premiums that are automatically withdrawn from your checking or savings account. This new electronic giving program will allow you to make contributions without having to lift a pen to write a check or reach into your wallet for cash!
You may make a single donation or a recurring donation. You can specify the amount, the frequency, and the fund, and you can make changes easily from your own computer. Just go to the church website www.mvlutheran.org and click on Online Giving/Simply Giving.
Option Two:
Simply Giving
We will continue to offer the Simply Giving direct debit program as well. This program also transfers your donations electronically to the church on a regular basis but requires you to fill out an authorization form and return it to the church office. Attach a voided check if you are requesting payments from your checking account. You choose the donation frequency and the donation amount for each fund you wish to support. The authorization form is available by contacting Chris Skarsten 480-893-2579 x127 or by downloading it from our website at www.mvlutheran.org/pdf/SimplyGiving.pdf.
Of course you can cancel your authorization of transfer at any time. But we believe that once you have enjoyed the convenience and savings of this new program you won’t want to go back to the old way of contributing.

DASH to Health Tidbits
By Deborah A. Richardson, MA, RD
“Yes” Foods
As our journey toward better health continues in this New Year, our focus this month will be foods to say “yes” to. Scientists know of many foods that are known to be extremely beneficial and impact our health favorably. Food is “medicine” that can help our bodies reduce the risk of many diseases, boost immunity and slow the aging process. Here are some of the foods that you might want to consider adding to your diet as you continue your journey toward optimal health:
- Berries – Fiber-rich, good source of potassium and contain potent antioxidants that help protect against age-related memory loss, heart disease and pack cancer-fighting agents.
- Broccoli – Loaded with anti-cancer substances, folate and fiber. Frozen broccoli is often better than fresh because it contains more florets, which house the most nutrients. Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, kale and cabbage have similar benefits.
- Popcorn – Light, transfat-free popcorn (Smart Balance) makes a filling whole grain snack. Try “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter” Spray for a buttery flavor without the fat.
- Walnuts – Contain omega-3 fatty acids that help protect against heart attacks, reduce inflammation and sterols that help keep cholesterol levels low. They also provide protein, fiber and magnesium.
- Peanut Butter – Most of the fat in peanut butter is monosaturated so it helps to lower those cholesterol levels.
- Onions – Contain sulfur compounds and flavenoids that help fight heart disease and cancer.
- Yogurt – Excellent source of calcium, protein and good bacteria that boosts immunity and digestive function.
- Avocados – Source of cancer-fight agents and good (monounsaturated) fats that help in lowering cholesterol.
- Oats – High in fiber so they can aid in lowering cholesterol, reducing insulin resistance and stabilizing blood sugars. Watch out for the instant oatmeal packages which typically contain lots of extra sugar.
- Brazil nuts – Want a good source of the potent antioxidant selenium? Eat just two each day to get your daily dose which helps guard against prostate, colon and lung cancers.
- Beans – Black, kidney, pinto, etc. are excellent sources of iron, protein and fiber to help reduce cholesterol. They are also rich in potassium, magnesium and folate for lowering blood pressure and possibly benefiting the brain.
- Tea – Full of antioxidants called catechins, research suggests a strong benefit for reducing heart disease. Opt for freshly brewed teas because iced teas, ready-to-drink teas and premixed iced-teas are low in the antioxidant and often laden with lots of sugar.
- Salmon – Contains large amounts of omega-3 essential fatty acids that help to lower blood pressure, bad cholesterol, triglycerides and inflammation.
- Sweet potatoes – Try substituting these colorful spuds for the white ones. They have an abundance of beta-carotene, vitamin C, folate and calcium. Good for bones and boosting immunity!
For information on more “yes” foods, take a look at Dr. Andrew Weil’s website: www.drweil.com.

God’s Global Barnyard
God's Global Barnyard will kick off on Ash Wednesday, February 17. We know you remember this but, just to refresh...this yearly event is one of our Sunday School's biggest projects. It is part of helping ELCA's war on world hunger and in a way that our children can truly relate. They know their animals and the teachers will explain how the animals will help the poor people to help themselves.
Sunday School will be focusing on the theme of life-sustaining animals as an important way to fight hunger. All the kids will have their own Barnyard Banks to fill and will turn them in on Palm Sunday. The littlest ones, in our preschool, will also participate. They will learn that $20 will build and stock a fish farm in Africa and the family that receives the fish farm will be able to eat fish, sell fish to obtain goods, and be able to share their knowledge with other villagers; $25 - $50 will buy a goat; $30 will buy a pig; $200 will start a honeybee hive and so on. We hope you, our generous congregants, will join with the children and help fight world hunger.
"And if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness and your night will become like the noonday." Isaiah 58:10
If you have questions, please contact Robin Moe, Director of Sunday School (rmoe@mvlutheran.org or 480-893-2579 x132) or Cindy Fossum, Director of Outreach Ministries (cfossum@mvlutheran.org or 480-892-2579 x131).

Hannah Circle
We will continue our study of the book of James on Tuesdays, February 2 & 16 at the home of Inge Mack. On February 2, our study is "Faith that Passes the Test" from James 2:21-26. Here James gives real-life illustrations of living faith: Abraham and Rahab, who were supremely committed to the Lord, whatever the cost. On February 16, our study is "Taming the Tongue" from James 3:1-12. James gives us three compelling reasons for controlling the tongue: its potential to condemn; its power to control; and its propensity to corrupt.
We are truly enjoying our study of James and learning more of what constitutes Godly behavior. Please join us, ladies, and make some new friends! We begin at 9:15am with coffee and fellowship. For more information, contact Inge at 480-961-4649 or Pam at 480-759-1897.

Health & Wellness
Holy Yoga
Holy Yoga has come to Mountain View. We will meet every Friday at 9:00am in the Family Life Center. Holy Yoga is a practice that encourages patience while cultivating an awareness of what God can manifest in our physical and emotional bodies. When we intentionally withdraw ourselves from the craziness of our daily living, we find the peace that is God Himself as the center of our existence. Consecrated by God’s Word and prayer, Holy Yoga invites us to worship with the entirety of our being…heart, soul, mind and strength. When we live and move and have our being in Him, we find ourselves in the flow of His magnificence and in the midst of His grace.
The class is free and open to all. No previous yoga experience is required. If you have a yoga mat, please bring it. Childcare is available through PlayCare but advance sign-up is required and a free will offering is suggested.
For more information, contact Dianna Bertout at 602-359-3020 or Chris Mahon at cmahon@mvlutheran.org or 480-893-2579 x130.

Changes are coming…in mid- January, we began a remodeling/rearranging project. Several departments are being changed to create better displays and accessibility. Drop by in early to mid-February to see our new look.
Your donations continue to be a blessing. Our customers often comment on the quality of our merchandise. We cannot be successful without you. Each month as we request certain items, you come through and help us out! Thank you!

Mountain View Academy
Wednesdays at MVLC are back! We begin the night with wonderful meals and fellowship then split up into many educational and enriching activities.
Crossways, a journey through the Bible taught by Pastor Zorb, and an introduction to Lutheranism called The Lutheran Course is being taught by Pastor Leland through February 17. Generation Change (Financial Peace University for high school students) is being facilitated by Colin Noonan, and Financial Peace University is being offered by Michael Sheldon. All children are invited to XTRA as they explore more of the Biblical connections to the classic works in the Chronicles of Narnia series. Krista Kayser is leading another wonderful Beth Moore study for women. High school youth are invited to Bible Study and to Metanoia fellowship. Once again we are hosting Alpha so that our friends and neighbors can be introduced to Christ and the gifts of God’s love. Childcare is provided during class times each week.
Beginning Wednesday, February 24, Pastor Leland will be facilitating a book study on Dietrich Bonheoffer’s Cost of Discipleship. Bonheoffer was a German Lutheran pastor during the Nazi era. He spent much of his time during World War II working with people throughout Germany to plot the assassination of Adolf Hitler. This book study will continue through the end of March. Books can be purchased in Café Soul.

Outreach Ministries
Soul Food Pantry
In December we depleted our food supply. The congregation came through again in a big way by restocking our shelves and allowing us to take some of the overflow to Kyrene Family Resource Center, which always need food to help the families in our community.
Monetary donations were made from the Food Pantry funds to Advocates for the Disabled, Kyrene Resource Center, Children First Academy, and Chandler Christian Community Center. Thank you for your continued support to this worthy cause.
If you are a Church member and need food assistance, and would like a confidential food pick-up, contact Barb at 480-491-5712.
Financial Disbursements
Through fund raisers last year our committee finally has a budget. In January we sent $250 to each of the following: Elizabeth House, Child Crisis Center-East Valley, Inc., Habitat for Humanity, and
Adolescent Pregnancy and Parenting Program. We will select four organizations each month to assist with funds as we are able.
Volunteer Day
In January four women and three teenage girls went to New Day Center and served lunch to the residents. It was a fulfilling experience and good fellowship enjoyed by all.
Volunteer Opportunity
On Saturday, February 20, we will be going to Phoenix Rescue Mission, Saturday to serve dinner from 4:15 - 6:15pm. We need seven volunteers and we will car pool from church at 3:45pm. Teens welcome but must be at least 16 and with a parent. Contact Nessie at 480-747-7402 if you can help.
Ministry Meeting
Our next meeting will be Tuesday, February 2 in the Education Building at 6:30pm. We need your input and ideas to best uphold our Outreach Ministries mission based on Matthew 25:34-40. New members are invited and always welcome!

PlayCare
PlayCare is off to a good start this year! It has been very busy and we welcomed several new “little people.”
We were given a gift of a train table and it has become one of our favorites. Many thanks to all who gave to PlayCare in 2009. Our needs right now are wipes for the little “bottoms” and size 5 diapers.
Please remember to register or call when you plan on using PlayCare or we might not be open or already full.

Sunday School
Sunday School is focusing on Luke 5:1-11 and Jesus’ call for disciples. The children are encouraged to know “who left everything behind to follow Jesus?” They are encouraged to think about “What does it mean to catch people?”
At the beginning of the Sunday School year each class was challenged to memorize different faith based pieces as follows: Preschool and Kindergarten – The Lord’s Prayer; 1st and 2nd grade – The Ten Commandments; 3rd and 4th grade – The Apostle’s Creed; and 5th grade – Psalm 23. Students who have been working on these and can recite them to the director, Robin Moe, will be entered into a drawing to win a basket full of movies, books, music, etc. The drawing will be held on the last day of Sunday School (May 23). Parents, take a few minutes each night to practice these important pieces with your child.
