In February of 2005, Mountain View Lutheran Church became part of Family Promise, an interfaith network of churches who give shelter to families without homes. Each church provides food and shelter for these families from sunset to sunrise for one week. Each church generally hosts families three to four times per year.
How it Works Guests arrive at the church around 5:30pm on the assigned day, and the bus picks them up at 5:30am the next morning to take them back to the Day Center where they go about the day just as we would.
We usually have between 50-70 volunteers each host week. We set up our Sunday school rooms with rollaway beds (provided by the network), sheets, blankets, towels, clocks, tables and reading material. We have four to five people each evening to help cook and serve dinner from 5:00-7:00pm. Two volunteers share a meal and help with families and kids from 6:00-8:00pm. There are two overnight hosts to “hold down the fort” from 8:00pm through 5:30am. A nurse or doctor is on call each night. Volunteers pick up a load of laundry each morning and at the end of the week. At the end of the week we put the Sunday school rooms back in order at 7:00am, and volunteers truck the beds to the next church.
